He graduated from the prestigious Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), Kaduna, where he earned the NDA Certificate of Education. Tunji Olurin also underwent training at the School of Infantry, Quetta, Pakistan, the Command and Staff College, Jaji, Kaduna, and the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru, Jos.

In March 1970, Tunji Olurin was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Nigerian Army.
